Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent visa category is designed to attract leaders or those who have the potential to become leaders in the field covering arts and culture (including architecture and fashion design), digital technology and science, engineering, humanities and medicine.

UK Global Talent visa: Initial and extension application eligibility requirements:

To qualify for Global Talent visa, you must satisfy the following UK Visas and Immigration requirements:

  • You are at least 18 years old at the date of the application
  • Meet the relevant immigration status requirement
  • Must not be in the UK in breach of immigration laws
  • You are in possession of an endorsement by an endorsing body
  • Must not fall for refusal under the general grounds for refusal

Global Talent Endorsing Criteria:

When applying for endorsement by an endorsing body, you must, in many cases, decide whether to apply on the basis of:

  • being exceptionally talented- meaning you are a current leader in you field, or
  • showing exceptional promise- meaning you show the potential to become a leader in your field

The relevant Home Office approved endorsing bodies are:

  • The Royal Society – for natural and medical science applications
  • The British Academy – for humanities and social science applications
  • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) – for science and research applications
  • The Royal Academy of Engineering – for engineering applications
  • Arts Council England – for arts, culture, fashion, architecture, film and television applications
  • Tech Nation – for digital technology applications

Endorsing bodies: how to apply

You must submit a Stage 1 application for endorsement and pay the relevant fee via the online Stage 1 application form. These applications are submitted to the Home Office, despite the application actually being decided by the endorsing body, and all subsequent communication should be with the Home Office.

Applying before you have obtained Stage 1 endorsement:

The Global Talent category allows you to apply for leave to remain while Stage 1 application is still being decided.

Switching into Global Talent visa category:

You can switch into this route if you currently hold visa as a Tier 1 migrant, Tier 2 migrant, Tier 5 (Temporary Worker) migrant in the Government Authorised Exchange sub-category in an exchange scheme as sponsored researchers, a Start-up migrant, or an Innovator migrant.

Can you work under Global Talent visa:

It is a non-sponsored route, so in this category you will be able to work in any employed or self-employed role in the endorsed field.

Can you bring family members under the Global Talent visa:

As a Global Talent Visa holder, you have the right to bring your dependents to the UK. A dependant can be your spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner, child under 18. Your child over the 18 years of age should be currently residing in the UK to apply as a dependent.

How long UK Global Talent visa is valid for:

Initial or further limited leave to remain will be granted for a period of one year, two years, three years, four years or five years, at your choosing. There is no difference in the cost, however long the requested length of leave. There is no restriction on the maximum time spent in this category therefore it is sensible to consider applying for the full five years.

English language requirement for UK Global Talent visa:

You are not be subject to any credibility or English language assessment.

Maintenance requirement for UK Global Tenant Visa:

You are not required to satisfy any maintenance requirement in this immigration category.

Indefinite leave to remain: Global Talent and Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) categories:

It is still possible to apply for indefinite leave to remain in both categories, as the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) category has been kept open for these purposes only.

You are requird to have spent a continuous lawful period in the UK of five years, for those endorsed for Exceptional Promise by Tech Nation or Arts Council England.

What happens if your Global Talent visa application is refused:

Should you fail to meet the requirements, it is likely that any future applications for temporary migration (such as a visit visa) will be subjected to greater scrutiny.

If the application was submitted from outside the UK (entry clearance), then you will have 28 days but in all other cases 14 days from the date of service of the decision to lodge Administrative Review.
